In the first years since its foundation, the Fondation Pierre Bourdieu has focused its activities on the following areas:

Creation of an international network of researchers in the compass of Bourdieu’s social theory and research strategy

The Foundation organises conferences, colloquia, exhibitions and workshops. It coordinates and fosters contacts with affiliated researchers around the globe. One example of this commitment has been the similarly oriented EU-network ESSE, with more than one hundred participating researchers from more than fourteen countries.

Exhibition of Pierre Bourdieu's photographs from Algeria

While doing fieldwork in Algeria between 1958 and 1961 Pierre Bourdieu created photographs that are both exemplary of his earliest output and still topical today. He entrusted his archive to Franz Schultheis and Camera Austria so that these photographs could be presented to the public in both an exhibition and publication. The selection of 150 images to-date has been shown in various settings and countries all over the world.

Subsidisation of (social) science editions

The Foundation is committed to free circulation of social science publications beyond language borders, national scientific traditions, and cultural patterns of thought. It promotes the publication of outstanding dissertations that carry on the research tradition established by Pierre Bourdieu.

Promotion of young researchers in the social sciences

The Foundation promotes the rising generation of scholars and provides promising young academics access to scholarships. It acts as an intermediary between them and relevant research projects at networked partner institutions.
