Short Description During the Costituent Assembly, the jurist Piero Calamandrei stated that in “the dead people,” namely the exceptional loss of human life during World War II, we must find the most important source of legitimacy of the new Italian and European democracies. From this view point, the volume by the historian Leonardo Paggi, at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, describes the transition to democracy, focusing on the violent bombings by Anglo-Americans which until today were unmentioned in compliance with the paradigm of “just war”. Unpublished documents from the state's archive brought to light the new sense of rights that spread among the population more severely affected by Nazi-fascist violence. In addition, Paggi refuses the thesis of “transformism” among Italian intellectuals and by rereading the role of rupture the war takes, in the work by Piero Calamandrei and Eugenio Montale, brought solace to the Bourdieusian categories of “field of power” and “intellectual field.” This does not deny the image of passativity suggested by the revisionist theory of the “gray zone,” according to which on September 8 (armistice with the Allies) a sort of suspension of the self-consciousness of the Italian people would have occurred. During a total war that no longer distinguishes between combatant and noncombatant, and that undermines the power of state protection, arises the new republican citizen that breaks from the patriarchal power exercised by fascism. -- See the review of the book by Andrea Rapini (in Italian): http://www.storicamente.org/06_dibattiti/paggi/paggi_rapini.html
